The second year of the BA(Hons) Architecture builds upon the principles acquired in first year, developing practical skills, which will ultimately become integrated within the design project work in third year.
Second year is taught as a series of studios, within which students remain for the entire year. Each studio pursues its own agenda, operating within the overarching school-wide project. Each studio goes to a different field trip destination, which connects with the agenda of the studio. The studios run a separate design project each semester, although these two projects will work within the larger studio agenda. At the beginning of the academic year the studio tutors present an overview of their studio direction for the year and students are offered the opportunity to vote for which studio they would like to join.
From entering the year as a first year, and leaving as a third year, the student undergoes a significant transition through this year of the course. By the end of second year students must demonstrate that they are ready to enter the third and final year of the degree. In addition to acquiring the necessary design, research, and technical skills, students will demonstrate a level of professionalism, including effective time management and accepting responsibility for meeting deadlines.
