Nicole Wermers & Boudicca:  Fellows Studio Residency & Public Lecture
Stanley Picker Gallery – Wed 1 May All Welcome!

The Stanley Picker Gallery is presenting the first public opportunity to hear and see some of the ideas and works in progress of Stanley Picker Fellows Nicole Wermers and Boudicca (Zowie Broach & Brian Kirkby) as they pursue their research and make preliminary plans for their Fellowship exhibitions in the next academic year.

Nicole Wermers will be introducing her Fellowship project and wider practice in a lunchtime talk at 1.30pm on Wednesday 1 May in the Main Lecture Theatre at the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture. She will be focusing on her research at the interface of art and design and her investigations into the grades of functionality of sculptural objects, examining the urban experience and production of public and private space and of transitional public realms such as museums and cafés.

Boudicca will be opening the Fellows Studio in the Stanley Picker Gallery to the public from 1-8 May, where the two designers have been experimenting with new ideas to initiate their Fellowship research. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet Boudicca informally and find out more about their wider practice from 5-7pm on Wednesday 1 May, and will be able to re-visit the studio over the following week to witness the work in development.

Studio 3.2 of the School of Architecture & Landscape: Raising a portable spire

Third year students from Studio 3.2 of School of Architecture & Landscape have succeeded the lifting test of a 9.5 m tall timber spire, using the A-frame and rope method, entirely operated on the ground.

This is a part of the studio’s investigation towards construction and logistics, relating to the yearlong thesis project dealing with the issue of landmark in the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Stonehenge and Avebury, Wiltshire.

The timber spire is a 1:5 scale interpretation of Salisbury Cathedral, which contains complex medieval timber frames for permanent scaffolding inside of the stone octagonal spire. In this structure, the boundary between the idea of temporary and permanent is ambiguous.

The timber spire is going to be exhibited in the Knights Park Foyer from 19th February 2013 for two weeks until 1st March 2013, and at the Excel in Docklands as part of the University stand for Ecobuild 2013 in March.

The lifting test was carried out on Sunday the 10th February 2013.

Marloes ten Bhömer: A Measurable Factor Sets the Conditions of its Operation, Stanley Picker Gallery

Marloes ten Bhömer
A Measurable Factor Sets the Conditions of its Operation
Stanley Picker Gallery 14 February-6 April 2013

Launch Wed 13 Feb 6-8.30pm All Welcome
5pm Introductory tour with Marloes ten Bhömer

A Measurable Factor Sets the Conditions of its Operation is an exhibition of investigative pieces, processes, tests and trials for a new footwear collection informed by engineering principles.

This method, which purposefully shirks fashion trends and styles, is based on research into the structural parameters required to support a foot (in a high-heeled position) whilst in motion. In so doing, Stanley Picker Fellow Marloes ten Bhömer’s aim is to completely replace the standard and regimented approaches to footwear design and manufacturing with the working and production methods of engineering.

The consequences of ten Bhömer’s research methodology are two-fold: First, her approach reveals a link between rationalised parameters, aesthetic intuition and structural understanding. Second, by considering ‘the woman in motion’ as an engineering problem, she both exposes and criticises the cultural formations of female identity and the role high heels play.

A programme of associated events will accompany the exhibition, details to be announced at www.stanleypickergallery.org

New Stanley Picker Fellows Appointed: Boudicca & Nicole Wermers

The Stanley Picker Gallery is delighted to announce the appointments of avant-garde fashion designers Boudicca and acclaimed artist Nicole Wermers to the Stanley Picker Fellowship programme.

In a year that saw Stanley Picker Fellow Elizabeth Price win the Turner Prize and Design Fellows El Ultimo Grito receive the London Design Medal, the two new appointments follow those of Andy Holden and Marloes ten Bhömer (2011) and Matthew Darbyshire and Daniel Eatock (2010) in bringing further international prestige to the culture of practice-based research at the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture at Kingston University.

Boudicca (Zowie Broach & Brian Kirkby) and Wermers are highly regarded for the significant contributions they have made to their chosen fields of creative practice, their individual Fellowship proposals both promising challenging and enriching interdisciplinary perspectives across the fields of art and design. The new Fellows commence their research activities at Kingston by introducing their practice through a programme of public events to be announced on the Gallery’s website over the coming weeks.

The Stanley Picker Fellowships provide funding towards developing innovative exhibition projects of international standing that form a core part of the Gallery’s programme. For the 2012 Fellowships more than 150 proposals were received from artists and designers based across the UK and internationally.

Visit www.stanleypickergallery.org for more information.
