The Sustainable Design Research Centre invites proposals for a Masters Degree by Research. This is particularly well suited for those who wish to develop an independent research project in the multi-disciplinary field of Sustainable Design.
The Centre is situated within the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture not within a single School. Therefore the Centre's academics are from multiple disciplines knowledge bases. They are ideally placed to offer personal supervision of a dissertation and design practice-led solutions ('other output') leading to the degree of MA by Research.
Course outline
Students are supported by a programme of research methods training, by participating in research seminars, and by an individually tutored dissertation or design solutions. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Centre’s varied events programme.
This course is a flexible learning programme designed for anyone who wants to conduct an extended and supervised research project in the growing area of Sustainable Design. Over the period of one year (full-time) or two years (part-time), research students pursue an individual programme of work, expanding their knowledge of the subject area and providing an opportunity to contribute a piece of original research.
All postgraduate students on research programmes are supported by the University Graduate School as well as by their home Faculty. Postgraduate students are entitled to use the state-of-the-art computing and research facilities available to them at the Graduate Centres as well as other facilities normally available to University students. Students will also have access to the University Counselling Service and Careers Advisory Service.
Research students
The Centre welcomes applications from students with a good first degree in a relevant design and architecture disciplines, but also in other disciplines where the applicant demonstrates that their subject area and methodological approach are appropriate to the field of sustainable design. We also welcome applications from potential research students with professional or other qualifications who have not necessarily pursued a traditional academic career path.
The research students' work contributes to the research culture of the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture, to that of the University more widely, and to this growing area of multi-disciplinary research. The MA programme may be used as the foundation for a PhD degree in Sustainable Design.
Centre staff
The Centre's core staff members are active researchers, publishing and creating widely in their specialist areas within this interdisciplinary field.
