Introduction

Dr Pretlove has an education in construction engineering, architecture and environmental studies. His academic interests include sustainable and environmental architectural design, with a particular emphasis on energy and carbon emissions, and the health impacts of indoor environments. His research work concentrates on the hygrothermal modelling of environments in buildings and the impact that these environments have on the risk of micro-organisms, such as mites and moulds developing.

He has published his work widely in refereed journals, at international conferences and in books. Stephen has won awards for his research including being awarded the 2004 Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Carter Bronze Medal for his paper entitled The Nottingham energy, health and housing study: reducing relative humidity, dust mites and asthma. He was also awarded the Kingston University Promising Researcher Fellowship in 2006, resulting in a six month sabbatical working in collaboration with researchers at the Bartlett Graduate School, part of University College London. His work has also received international media coverage through the medium of print, radio, television and the internet by organisations including the BBC, Channel 4 and National Geographic.

During the past six years he has been the co-investigator in two EPSRC funded research projects worth a total value of more than £230K. As such, he has worked alongside multi-disciplined groups involving building scientists, architects, engineers, biologists and medics from organisations including Cambridge University, University College London, Cardiff University and The Royal Agricultural College, among others.

Stephen is the Director of the Faculty’s new teaching, research and consultancy facility, the Architectural Science and Technology Laboratory (ArchiLab). ArchiLab is a state-of-the-art facility for assessing the environmental and sustainable issues associated with landscape and building design in the three broad areas of lighting, acoustics and comfort.
