Biography

London-based artist Elizabeth Price (British, b. 1966) creates richly multi-layered narrative moving image works made specifically for gallery environments. Often beginning with research undertaken in archives and museum collections, Price draws on varying references, such as architectural sites, social and political histories, as well as the language of advertising copy.

Composed of collaged imagery – analogue and digital photography, animation, and motion graphics – Price's works almost always include scrolling text, often read out loud by a narrator's computerised voice set against a musical background. Through the artist's choice of composition, archival footage is brought into conversation with digitally rendered imagery, weaving together the visual traces of specific social histories and charting the migration of these materials through varied technologies of representation.

In 2012 Price was awarded the Turner Prize for her solo exhibition 'HERE' at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead. She has exhibited at The Hayward Gallery London; The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford: The Stedelijk, Amsterdam, The New Museum, New York; Julia Stoschek Foundation, Düsseldorf; The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Stockholm; NBK Berlin; the Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal and was featured in the British Art Show 2011. Recently she curated the large scale trans-historical touring exhibition, IN A DREAM YOU SAW A WAY TO SURVIVE AND YOU WERE FULL OF JOY, exhibited at the Whitworth Gallery Manchester and the De La Warr Pavilion Bexhill, UK.

In 2017 Price will exhibit at ISAW New York. In 2018 she will present a new commission at the Museum Fur NaturKunde, Berlin and a new commission and solo exhibition at The Walker, Minneapolis. This will tour to Nottingham contemporary in the same year and a European Museum tbc. The commission will be accompanied with the launch of a monograph publication. In 2019 Price will present a major solo exhibition, featuring her video work made over the previous decade, at the Whitworth Manchester, and including the commission of two major new works.

Price lives and works in London. She studied undergraduate Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University, Masters in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art, London and PhD at the University of Leeds. She is presently Professor of Film and Photography at Kingston University, UK.
