Position: Senior Lecturer
John Corkindale holds a part-time (fte0.2) post as Senior Lecturer in Economics in the School of Surveying and Planning. He has previously worked in an economic advisory capacity for a number of government departments including the Ministry of Agriculture, Nairobi, Kenya (as a Fellow of the Overseas Development Institute), the (then) Department of Employment, HM Treasury, the Northern Ireland Department of Finance and Personnel, the (then) Department of the Environment, and, most recently, the Environment Agency. In 1995-96, he was a Visiting Government Research Fellow in the Department of Land Economy, Cambridge University where he carried out research, subsequently published, on the economics of land use planning.
Apart from his professional work, John has carried out fieldwork for the British Trust for Ornithology (Birds of Estuaries Enquiry), the RSPB (Wetland Bird Survey and Northern Ireland Breeding Wader Survey), and Richmond Park Bird Recording Group. He is also an opera singer and has recently given concert performances of substantial extracts from L'Ormindo (title role), Otello (title role) and Die Walküre (Siegmund).
John Corkindale's main research interests are in (a) the economics of land use planning, (b) the economics of conserving the built and natural environment, (c) cost-benefit analysis, economic appraisal and environmental valuation. Selected key research outputs are as follows:
