Mr Philip Davies

Position: Course Director, BA(Hons) Product & Furniture Design


Philip Davies is Course Director of Product & Furniture Design at Kingston University. He is a designer, practitioner and researcher with a background in Industrial Design, Consumer Products and Furniture. Formerly a graduate from the RCA and lead Designer at IDEO London, he continues runs his own design consultancy.

Philip studied at the Royal College of Art attaining a Master of Design in Industrial Design. His RCA work explored the challenging relationship between visual semantics and new technologies requiring a re think of Dieter Rams' Form Follows function mantra. After graduation he worked in London and California firstly for Moggeridge Associates and then IDEO. As Principle designer he was responsible for a dynamic range of projects and products including well over 30 consumer products that reached market. His furniture designs included the award winning Steelcase 1+1 office system sold across Europe together with the Steelcase "moving" furniture research project that won an IDSA Business Week award.

Consumer work included products for Ford: Car Radios and in car entertainment products, Samsung: TV's and accessories, Telephones for Motorola, Avaya and Orange (EE), Tefal: Graphic designs for their trade mark "thermospot" mark.

Special one off projects included designing the Commonwealth Games Baton for the Queens Jubilee games. Private consultancy work has included industrial products for BOC Edwards and a waterless Egg Cooker (invented by James Seddon) that appeared on the Dragon's Den TV program.

Philip began teaching in 2005 whilst continuing his consultancy work. He has lectured and taught extensively including the University of Plymouth, UCA Farnham, UCA Rochester and Minneapolis College of Art &Design.

He became course director in 2013 and continues to run his own practice alongside his academic roles.

Research & External Collaborations:
External collaborations include projects with New Balance, Dixons Retail, Hay, Continental Tyres, Heals, Black & Blum and Herman Miller. These design lead projects foster creative working relationships between industry and academia, challenging students to deliverer intellectual yet practical solutions within a context.

Teaching areas & responsibilities

I run the first year cohorts across Product & Furniture Design BA and Product design BSc, teaching demonstrating and lecturing. I run the internal and live projects, author the briefs and undertake project assessments and pastoral care for this group.

I am course director for Product design BSc and liaise with SEC / Engineering and Science to promote and deliver the BSc course.
