Professor Sarah Sayce

School: The School of Surveying & Planning
Position: Head of School, School of Surveying & Planning

Biography

Professor Sarah Sayce is the Head of the School of Surveying & Planning. She initially qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and worked in both the corporate field and in consultancy in London and the South-East specializing in property valuation and management. She then moved into academia, gaining a PhD from the University of Reading for an investigation into investment in leisure property.

In her capacity of Head of school she has responsibility for a wide-ranging suite of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and she directs the Centre for Real Estate Research.

Sarah is an active and widely published researcher. She currently concentrates on sustainability and commercial property markets, though she is also very active in the fields of spatial planning and professional education. This combined expertise in professional education and sustainable real estate helped her to lead a successful bid to Government to set up C-SCAIPE (Centre for Sustainable Communities Achieved through Integrated Professional Education) which seeks to promote active citizenship among the student body and an holistic understanding of sustainability.

Sarah is active within the RICS, having served on the Governing Council and she continues to serve on several committees and act as a Professional Competence Assessor.

Research expertise

My current research interests centre primarily round commercial property appraisal and management, recently centred on the implications of the sustainability agenda but extending to valuation issues generally and to leisure and heritage assets. In relation to sustainability I have authored professional body global guidance and sat on industry advisory groups in addition to undertaking numerous contracted research projects. I also have an active interest and expertise in spatial planning matters and have undertaken government commissioned research in relation to planning policy issues, such as back land development and I am currently working on the new land auction model aimed at promoting the supply of development land. I also have expertise in professional education including developing skills for sustainable communities and have contributed to several books in relation to the sustainability and higher education agenda.
