BSc (Hons) in Building Surveying (in the School of Surveying and Planning), was awarded a CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building) Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Fund Scholarship for 2009.
"I was shocked but really elated when I received the letter telling me I had been awarded the scholarship" said Kerri
Kerri went on to describe how she heard about the Jubilee Fund through an email notification sent to all of the students from the School Office advising them of the scholarship and telling them how to apply.
"I thought that I could definitely do a piece of work like this (referring to the application brief) and thought that it was a very good opportunity".
The award was open to students studying a CIOB accredited course in the penultimate year of their studies and students had to have approval from the course director to be the representative of their School. Tim Bennett, Undergraduate Course Director, was not surprised Kerri won the prize as "she is a hardworking student and understands the need to integrate wider market knowledge as part of her studies. Employers want students who have a wider perspective of the market place."
Kerri submitted her final paper for her Research Journal in Context module titled 'Does the Law and Regulation for Dilapidated Listed Buildings support or contradict saving Listed Buildings?' and stated that the research she did in this module helped her choose her dissertation topic and it will be her dissertation that may be published by the CIOB!
Kerri is enjoying the course so far and feels that there is a good variety of subjects, the highlight for her is the Building Heritage module as she is "passionately interested in historic buildings and sustainability, in fact I’m writing my dissertation on this subject".
When asked about her future plans and she discussed her ambition to become a chartered surveyor and her passion for historic buildings. "I want to have a job that I enjoy so I intend to go into this sector and possibly do a masters degree in Building Heritage or Historic Building Conservation - you may see me here next year!"
Kerri was asked to give some advice to current students still studying and had this to say "A general piece of advice is to work consistently throughout the year on the research for your assignments - try not to leave it all until the last minute! I would also suggest that students studying quantity surveying and building surveying should apply for the CIOB Jubilee Scholarship as there is an excellent financial incentive as well as looking very good on the CV."
