Biography

Fiona Fisher is curator of Kingston University's Dorich House Museum, the former studio home of the sculptor Dora Gordine and her husband, the Hon. Richard Hare, a scholar of Russian art and literature, and is a researcher in design history in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, where she supports the research and activities of the Modern Interiors Research Centre. Fiona graduated from Kingston University in 2004 with a BA (Hons) in Art, Architecture and Design History. In 2008 she was awarded a PhD for her research into the design of London's late nineteenth century public houses. She has co-convened the Modern Interiors Research Centre's annual conference since 2008 and is a co-editor of its most recent anthologies, The Routledge Companion to Design Studies, Routledge, 2017 (with Penny Sparke), British Design: tradition and modernity after 1948, Bloomsbury, 2016 (with Christopher Breward and Ghislaine Wood) and Performance, Fashion and the Modern Interior: from the Victorians to today, Berg, 2011 (with Trevor Keeble, Patricia Lara-Betancourt, Brenda Martin). Fiona's research into the British architect Kenneth Wood was supported by an AHRC Early Career Fellowship in 2011 and 2012 and is published as: Designing the British Post-War Home: Kenneth Wood, 1948-1968, Routledge Research in Architecture Series, 2015. Her short film on Wood, A Modernist in Suburbia, made in collaboration with Gilly Booth/hijack, was short-listed in the Anniversary Award category for best AHRC/AHRB-funded film since 1998 at the inaugural AHRC Research in Film Awards in 2015. Fiona recently completed (with Rebecca Preston, Royal Holloway) an area study of Bristol's public houses for Historic England, The Nineteenth and Twentieth-Century Public House in Bristol, 2015, and is currently researching a book on the design of the modern public house.
